Japanese Interdisciplinary Performance

Person in traditional clothing enjoying falling snow outdoors.

 “Musubi”

Directed and conceived by Takako Segawa
Performed by Yukari Snyder & Takako Segawa
Taiko and Fue composed and improvised by Kokichi

An electrifying interdisciplinary performance where rhythm, movement, and ink converge. A taiko drummer commands not only thunderous beats but also the haunting voice of the flute, weaving soundscapes that guide the stage. In response, contemporary dancers embody the music, their movements flowing seamlessly into the art of calligraphy, where brush and body unite to create living, evolving characters before your eyes. Witness the moment when dots transform into lines—an ephemeral instant where creation comes alive. This is a visceral dialogue between sound, motion, and form, transforming tradition into something vividly new.

White Pine Kendo Club

Kendo, which in Japanese means “Way of the Sword,” is a modern Japanese martial art rooted in the traditions and training methods of the samurai. Developed in the 17th century as a safer way to practice swordsmanship, Kendo uses bamboo swords (shinai) and specially designed armour (bogu) that have been refined over centuries to allow realistic training in a controlled and respectful environment.

Our club in Sudbury was founded by Tatsumi Sensei of Mito-shi, Ibaraki, Japan, who came to Sudbury during the early 1990s as part of a sabbatical and research period at Laurentian University.
